Mestalla hosts a stunning Valencia CF performance against UD Las Palmas in the Copa del Rey (4-0)

Enero, 09 2018 -

Vietto scored a hat trick, Maksimovic got his first goal and now Marcelino's men await their quarter final opponents

Luciano Vietto scored a hat trick as Valencia CF produced a stunning performance to progress to the Copa del Rey quarter finals with a 4-0 win over UD Las Palmas at Mestalla. It was a comprehensive victory for Marcelino García Toral’s side, who were dominant throughout, and a memorable night for the Argentinian forward who completed his treble with a glorious 40-yard lob. On this form, no rival will want to face Valencia in Friday’s draw.

Marcelino made just two changes from the team that drew 1-1 at the Estadio Gran Canaria in last week’s first leg, Gabriel Paulista and Vietto coming in for Ezequiel Garay and Santi Mina. Meanwhile a strong bench featured the likes of Parejo, Guedes, Rodrigo and young Ferran Torres. Valencia CF flew out of the blocks, creating a host of early chances in the first twenty minutes, with Simone Zaza looking particularly dangerous.

The first opportunity saw Nacho Gil shoot wide at the near post with just 6 minutes gone. Five minutes later, Andreas Pereira’s left-footed effort was just off-target. Then Luciano Vietto’s first sight of goal flew over the bar from outside the box. On 29 minutes though, he had his first goal in a Valencia CF shirt in his first start for the club. It was made by Zaza, as the Italian’s header was kept out by a super Lizoáin save before Vietto, following up, fired into the roof of the net.

Early in the second half, our new signing had his second. Forwards thrive on confidence, and there was a real swagger to Vietto’s finish on 48 minutes as he delicately lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 2-0. Valencia were opening Las Palmas up repeatedly, before a powerful long-range effort from Maksimovic flew into the top corner to make it 3-0 with 54 minutes gone. The visitors were overwhelmed, while Marcelino’s team looked capable of scoring at will. Toni Lato could have done further damage, but dragged his 58th minute shot wide.

The moment of the night came with 65 minutes gone. Vietto spotted Lizoáin off his line and, from fully 40 yards out, lobbed the Las Palmas keeper to claim the match ball. Five minutes later, he was substituted to a deafening standing ovation from a Mestalla crowd that has found its latest idol. Valencia CF could have added to their tally, Martin Montoya going close at the end, but it finished 4-0 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate. We’ll discover our quarter final opponents in Friday’s draw, and the first leg will be played next week.
