Zaza continues to follow in David Villa and Mario Kempes’ footsteps

The Italian forward will miss next game due to suspension

Simone Zaza couldn’t get goals off his mind, despite having failed to score in his previous four LaLiga matches heading into this Saturday’s clash against Celta Vigo. In the 27th minute, however, Mestalla got to chant his name once again, after the Italian managed to fire home a Dani Parejo corner delivery after getting up first at the near post.

With this goal, his tenth of the league season so far, Zaza is treading the same path as the likes of club legends David Villa and Mario Kempes. They were the last two players at Valencia to score 10 goals or more in the opening 15 match days of a campaign, and he has done the same after amassing strikes versus Celta Vigo, Deportivo Alaves, Sevilla, Real Betis, Athletic Club, Real Sociedad, Malaga (3) and Las Palmas.

David Villa was the last Valencia player to hit these figures when he managed 12 goals at this point in both 2008/09 and 2009/10. Previously, Mario Kempes had netted 11 times in 15 matches back in 1979/80.

Zaza will not be able to play against Eibar at Ipurua next time out in LaLiga, after picking up a booking that sees him suspended for Valencia’s trip north. After receiving a yellow card from Munuera Montero in the second half for protesting for a potential penalty award, Marcelino will not be able to call upon his services. Previously, Zaza picked up bookings versus Las Palmas, Real Madrid, Athletic Club and Sevilla.
