The first challenge of 2018: the Copa del Rey

It’s ten years since our last trophy and Marcelino wants to fight for the Cup

“For Valencia CF it’s our ambition and our obligation to fight for the Cup. That’s what the fans and the club’s history demand”. That was the clear message that Valencia coach Marcelino gave in mid-October, and his players have taken it on board. Our next opponent in the tournament is UD Las Palmas. And, as Marcelino has said, Jaume Doménech will play in goal.

The Copa del Rey is the first challenge for Valencia CF as 2018 gets underway. This year marks ten years since the last trophy won by the club, the same length of time that one of our captains Jaume has gone without lifting a trophy, after winning the league at youth level in 2008. Since then, the goalkeeper and Valencia CF haven’t won silverware, which is an additional motivation for Jaume and his teammates to fight for the Copa del Rey, which sees its first last 16 tie this Wednesday 3rd January.

The goalkeeper, born in Almenara, made his debut in this competition on 10th February 2016, in a semi-final second leg game against FC Barcelona at Mestalla that ended one-all. Last season he played the two ties against CD Leganés and Celta Vigo, when we were knocked out in the last 16, but Jaume and his teammates want to write a different story in this tournament in 2018. With respect, humility and hard work, Valencia CF want to fight for this trophy and the second opponent we’ll face is UD Las Palmas… with Jaume in the starting XI.
