Mestalla wants to get back to enjoying itself against Girona FC

One of the exciting points heading into this game is the chance to see Luciano Vietto make his debut

What better way to celebrate part of the Three Kings’ celebrations in Valencia, than to see a game at Mestalla versus Girona FC on Saturday afternoon (16:15CET). It is also time to return to Mestalla after a break, where there is a desire to get back on track after ending 2017 with a disappointing result against Villarreal CF. This is the first time that Girona are paying this stadium a visit, and it could also be the first time that Luciano Vietto sets foot on Mestalla’s turf as a VCF player too.

In order to keep up the pace and remain in third place, Valencia CF need to keep turning up and putting in good showings, with Girona FC currently occupying 10th place in LaLiga. They have taken more points at home at Montilivi (12 of their 23) than away, and arrive at Mestalla having been on the receiving end of a heavy 4-1 defeat at the hands of Eibar recently. Previously, they suffered a 2-0 loss against Athletic, but in both games they battled until the end, as they continue to benefit from the consistency of having Pablo Machin at the helm for several years.

On the field, they employ a system that isn’t regularly used in LaLiga, which is something for Valencia CF to look out for and guard against. Girona use three central defenders and wing backs, with the latter two providing a great threat out wide. Stuani acts as their main focal point up top, and has found the back of the net on nine occasions already this campaign. He has a big influence given his stature and prowess in the air, with his contributions helping both Borja Garcia and Portu to get up in support of the attack. The latter came through the ranks at Valencia CF.

Marcelino cannot call upon Simone Zaza and Martin Montoya this weekend due to suspensions, with Carlos Soler, Jeison Murillo and Javi Jimenez still absent due to injury problems. However, he does have Luciano Vietto at his disposal, after the Argentine signed on loan from Atletico Madrid this week.
