January, 24 2018 -

Jaume produces heroics from twelve yards in a hard-fought game that went to extra time in the away leg against CD Alavés.

Valencia CF were back in cup action in midweek for the Copa del Rey second leg against CD Alavés at 7pm kick-off time. Marcelino’s side were looking to seal the tie following their 2-1 scoreline from the first leg at Mestalla.

The opening minutes of the first half saw a slow start with both sides exchanging possession, showing their stalls in defence while trying to find a foothold in the match. Marcelino’s side were forced into a substitution halfway through the first half when Garay replaced Paulista at the heart of the defence following an awkward fall.

José Gayà swung in a cross close to the 40-minute mark but Nemanja Maksimovic could not quite meet it on the 40-minute mark of the first half. Neither side were able to make any inroads in the game. The first half finished locked together at 0-0 with all to play for in the second half and edging CD Alavés in the tie.

The second half saw a higher tempo at both ends with Marcelino’s side looking for a goal trying to secure the tie to progress into the semi-finals. Valencia CF were pushed on the back foot by the opposition.

Marcelino made a like for like change on the hour mark. The Argentine forward made way for Rodrigo Moreno but it was the Portuguese winger who enjoyed the first meaningful chance with a right-footed shot following a great Maksimovic cross. Aforementioned Guedes delivered a delightful corner kick but Kondogbia crashed his effort against the crossbar.

Two minutes later, Abelardo made a substitution former Valencia CF player Munir El Haddadi opened the scoring on 73 minutes.Valencia CF Galician striker climbed off the bench to get it back on level terms and 2-3 on aggregate with a great finish on the break inside the left post following a neat Zaza forward pass.

Valencia CF suffered another setback when the home side netted the 2-1 from a corner kick through Rubén Sobrino who a volleyed in a right-footed shot from point-blank range finish to take the tie to extra time. The scoreline remained unchanged and Valencia CF had to do it the hard way.

The game resumed as tight as it finished in the first half of extra time. Ezequiel Garay, headed it wide six minutes into extra time but he was caught offside in the process. The tempo dropped due to the tiredness in both sides players.

The first half of extra time finished with the same scoreline with both sides trying to avoid the penalty shoot-out. Rodrigo Moreno came close following a superb Mina pass but Rodrigo’s shot rattled the bar off Sivera. Santi Mina tried his luck with a back-heeled flick deep into extra time second half. Martín Montoya blasted it from outside the area but his shot went skimming past the post. It was the last kick of the game; both sides had to play it out the hard way from twelve yards.

First up on the shoot-out was Tomás Pina who struck it down the centre past Jaume, Rodrigo was equal to it, Rodrigo passed it into the net down the right side.  Jaume produced heroics from twelve yards twice denying Pedraza and Hernán Pérez. Gayà scored the final spot-kick for Valencia CF and Rubén Sobrino fired over the last spot-kick.
