Coquelin’s personal side

Valencia CF’s latest signing used to play tennis and judo before taking up football

An introvert off the pitch, Francis Coquelin left his country and his family at the young age of 17. It wasn’t easy to start up a new life in London, with a different language that was hard to understand, but he settled in well and pressed on with his youth development.

His teachers always considered him a student that applied himself, with great language skills, and encouraged him to take up sports journalism in the future. “I liked this idea,” Coquelin has admitted on a few occasions, but his footballing career forced him to put his focus elsewhere, though he has promised his family that he will continue with his studies after his playing career.

Coquelin started by playing tennis and getting involved with judo, and only played football with his friends before getting picked up by AS Bourny when he was six years old. His destiny from that point was football, before he went on to stand out at a trial at Stade Lavallois Mayenne FC, where he was the first name on the list from a group of 60 boys. Later, he would get called up to the French youth ranks.

A big fan of cinema and music, Coquelin usually listens to rap. His favourite artists are Rohff, Booba and Nelly, but above all he enjoys watching football games on television.
