Maduro: “The key to the Copa del Rey is to win at Mestalla”

The Dutchman experienced that magical cup night in 2008, the last time that the club lifted a trophy, and backs VCF to stay strong at home against Deportivo Alaves

From Cyprus, where he plays his football with Omonia Nicosia, Hedwiges Maduro is enjoying watching every Valencia CF game. It has been a while since he moved on to pastures new in 2012, but his first season at the club saw him lift the Copa del Rey, and we haven’t won it again since. Maduro was the main guest on VCFradio’s ‘Som Passio’ show on Tuesday evening, where he talked through how important the fans will be at Mestalla in the knock-out stages, as it proved to be back in that fateful campaign.

What advice would you give to Valencia CF, who are four games away from a final?

“The Copa del Rey is very important, it was the last trophy that Valencia CF lifted. I believe that they are playing very well, they have a good team and they have a good chance of winning this piece of silverware again.”

Do you see them having a chance of going far in this competition?

“Of course, this Valencia CF side could beat any team in the world. We have to play against Deportivo Alaves and we have to win in Mestalla with the fans in order to go into the second leg at Mendizorroza with an advantage. In 2008, we won our games at Mestalla and then battled through away from home, but the key is to win at Mestalla.”

That Valencia CF side that won the cup in 2008, they knocked out FC Barcelona in the semi finals…

“Yeah, I still remember that we beat them 3-2 at Mestalla. Now FC Barcelona are the best team in the world, they win almost every game and it would be better to face them in the final, in just one match we could win, but over two it is more difficult.”

The fans are coming back to the team’s side…

“The fans are always going to be demanding because Valencia CF is a big club, the players know this, that the fanbase expect good results. Valencia CF is a great club, for me it should always be playing in the Champions League, and due to this the fans are demanding and I like that.”
