Jaume was the hero at Mendizorroza after saving two penalties

Jaume trains every day as though he is playing in a cup final. At Mendizorroza, he turned into the hero on the night, with his two penalty saves helping Valencia CF to squeeze through into the reckoning for the Copa del Rey semi finals. After all of the scenes of joy, he remembered his grandfather, the man who gave him unconditional support throughout even the most difficult moments in his career.

“Qualifying was for him,” Jaume explained after the result. Deportivo Alaves made things tough, and a penalty shootout was required to separate the two sides on the night in Vitoria. Tomas Pina sent him the wrong way initially, but Valencia CF’s very own cat went on to deny both Alfonso Pedraza and Hernan Perez. He couldn’t watch when it came to his teammates penalties, but after Ruben Sobrino put Alaves’ fifth penalty into the stands, he ripped off his own shirt in the celebrations. All of his teammates piled in to embrace him: the hero of the evening.

How do you feel?

“Happy, because we have got into the Copa del Rey semi finals, this team deserves it and now we have to keep working and see how things go.”

Has this been your best night as a Valencia player?

“This season, yes, and the most decisive night has been tonight.”

How were the penalties?

“I got advice from Ochotorena, we talked about impressions we had, about certain players and how they take their penalties. But during the penalties themselves I was guided by my own intuition and instinct one second before the shot. The truth is that I enjoy penalties…”

What do you think in moments like this?

“When the referee blew his whistle, I remembered my grandfather, who had always helped me in the difficult times, I remembered what he said, we are going to win for him. I dedicate this to him with all of my heart.”

It was a difficult tie…

“Yes, it has been difficult, but we have done it and you have to know how to win like this. You have to be content because the team have given their all, it wasn’t a pretty game but we worked ourselves into the ground and we’ve gone through, that is the most important thing.”
