Marcelino: “We want to turn this situation around as quickly as possible, let’s hope to do it on Thursday”

Marcelino García Toral spoke in the press room at the Wanda Metropolitano, after the unfair Valencia CF defeat to Atlético Madrid, saying that “the game was really tight, very few chances, in the first half they only had one opportunity well saved by Neto and in the second, they scored a wondergoal. Atletico defend well, we weren’t overwhelmed in one-on-ones. We had problems out wide, Carlos Soler is coming back from injury and we couldn’t play Andreas or Guedes. That’s why we didn’t create chances and it’s hard to win like that”.

Talking about the five straight defeats, three in LaLiga, the Valencia CF coach said that “each defeat is different, the most painful was the one against Las Palmas without any doubt as we made a lot of mistakes. The other two, against Real Madrid and today against Atletico were down to efficiency. We’re having a difficult month with lots of games. In each game we set up so that the opponent doesn’t create chances, and when we have the ball, create them. We had an opponent opposite us who barely concedes goals, but that’s not an excuse for not winning.

You never expect to lose, but the circumstances are like that. A packed week, in the semi-finals in the Copa del Rey with the chance to get to the final. I think we’ve accumulated a lot of injuries, that have prevented us from rotating and forced us to make do. Defeats always hurt and at the start of the game, we thought that if we won we’d take a step up the table. Today we weren’t at our best. It wasn’t our day in attack but we were good in defence”.

This week there’s a date that’s circled in the calendar, the second leg in the Cup semi-finals. “We’ll face the game with morale high, against a great opponent, we are ninety minutes away from playing the final and we’ll try with all our might. We want to turn this situation around as soon as possible and let’s hope we do it on Thursday in the Cup. Valencia CF should challenge for every trophy, to go far in every competition. We’re a tough team that’s hard to beat. We need to take our chances like we did in the first part of the season”.
