Mateu Alemany: “The key to the game was the goal, it smelled more like a draw than anything else”

Mateu Alemany, the general director of Valencia CF, spoke after the club’s game against Atletico Madrid, where a goal from Angel Correa settled proceedings. “The key to the game was the goal, that came at a time where the game was even and smelled more like a draw than anything else. The goal unbalanced the game and in games versus Atletico, whoever opens the scoring has a big advantage. It’s happened now and we must turned to Thursday’s game in the cup.”

The deadlock was broken by Atletico Madrid, courtesy of a thunderbolt from Angel Correa. “I think that they started a little better, perhaps for the first 20 minutes, and later they had the long-range shot after the corner, but until the goal I think that we had more control. The goal is an isolated incident and was a great strike, aside from that Atletico played well as a unit and made things difficult. Perhaps in the final stretch we lacked a freshness. Last Thursday was a very hard game and against Atletico it is difficult too.”

Now is the time to turn the focus to the semi-final clash in the cup, which will be played on Thursday versus FC Barcelona. Valencia CF are going to: “try to get to the final, we are counting on Mestalla. The team are going to be in their best shape and many things could happen on Thursday, we are hoping it goes well, while admitting that our opponent is one of the best in the world.”
