Marcelino changed things up with a midfield diamond versus FC Barcelona

Dani Parejo organised play ahead of the back four, with Kondogbia and Coquelin on either side

Marcelino and his technical staff prepared for this game like it would be their last. The Valencia CF boss has always prepared things right down until the most minute detail, and at Mestalla on Thursday evening he looked for a different way of using the players that he had at his disposal.

The Asturian went with an offensive line up, with Dani Parejo featuring at the base of a midfield diamond. Francis Coquelin and Geoffrey Kondogbia blanked their captain, with Rodrigo playing at the tip of the four in an attempt to link up with Luciano Vietto and Simone Zaza up front. In the first half, it worked very well indeed, with Jaume not tested all too often in the home net.

After conceding the first goal and seeing Rodrigo substituted due to injury, Marcelino introduced Goncalo Guedes and Carlos Soler on the flanks and reverted to his more familiar 4-4-2 system.
