Valencia CF get back to winning ways and boast a six-point cushion over fifth place in LaLiga

The derby ended the run of defeats, showing that the team are alive and kicking in the race for third place

Before the derby, Marcelino had labelled it a must-win game, and the team responded by ending their six-game run of defeats. They put in some serious work and hard miles on Mestalla’s pitch, but they achieved their aim and have managed to increase the gap between themselves and fifth place. Villarreal CF are now six points behind.

After a lot of tough games against difficult opponents, where Valencia CF were asked to compete to the best of their abilities, the dressing room knew that they needed to bounce back with three points. In LaLiga, Marcelino’s men hadn’t won since January 13th, but the run came to a close versus Levante UD.

Eight home games stood between Valencia CF and the end of the season, with the first clash during this run of “finals” coming in the form of the city derby. After a busy schedule that has included both league and Copa del Rey commitments, Marcelino will now be glad of a quiet week to allow his players to recuperate ahead of their match against Malaga CF next Saturday.

When the referee blew time on the end of the derby, Mestalla made plenty of noise, with the fans well aware of the efforts that their players had put in to achieve an important win. More than 38,000 people were present, as Mestalla got back to enjoying its football once more.
