Marcelino: “Valencia CF were much better and the victory is absolutely fair”

The coach, speaking in the Mestalla press room after the Valencia CF win over Levante UD, said his team were superior throughout the derby

Marcelino García Toral says “there’s no doubt that Valencia CF were much better than Levante and the victory is absolutely fair. I can’t remember any dangerous situations, or big saves from our keeper. We hit the woodwork twice and we dominated most of the game. I’m proud of the work, play, ambition and effort of the players. It’s our twelfth game in less than 40 days and I feel satisfied having wanted the win after a difficult month and a lot of defeats, some of them unwarranted”.

Marcelino returned to a familiar refrain of his since the start of the season. “With the support of the fans everything is easier. This is the atmosphere we should have for the remaining seven games at Mestalla. The victory was necessary, more than being just a balm. We needed to win. The effort was incredible. In the last fifteen days we’ve played against Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético and Levante. We’re happy and satisfied with the game and how we played”.

He was really positive about the workrate and finishing of Santi Mina. “He had a lot of chances, he scored, he hit the woodwork twice… That’s what we want from our forwards, to get chances. But again, I’m really happy with what we did. A clear, deserved triumph”. He also highlighted the intensity of Simone Zaza in his minutes on the pitch. “He made the most of them and I’m sure his finishing will change. It’s a question of time, for strikers it’s all about a run of form”.

On the Levante coach’s complaints about the refereeing, Marcelino explained that “it’s not for me to evaluate what a colleague, in this case a friend, says, he thinks what he thinks and I respect him absolutely. When decisions have gone against us, I didn’t say anything. If they favour us now, what can we do?”
