Mista: “It is the perfect time to go to Camp Nou, Valencia CF are flying high”

The former VCF player and current Juvenil A coach has talked about the fine form Marcelino’s men find themselves in

Miguel Ángel Ferrer ‘Mista’ spoke to VCF Radio, where he talked about his team’s form and season, the U17's, the Copa del Rey and the chances that Valencia CF of picking up a good result against FC Barcelona at Camp Nou on Saturday.

Visiting Camp Nou…

“I have good memories, yes. We won there 1-0, thanks to a great goal from Oliveira. I think that it is the best time to go to the Camp Nou, because Barcelona are obviously going to be very affected by how they were knocked out by Roma and Valencia CF are flying high after all that they have achieved. They have gone a lot of games without losing. This is the best time to go there and storm it, to secure their Champions League place once and for all.”

A wounded opponent…

“It will take a lot to recover after being eliminated like that. When you have a scoreline like 4-1 and everyone takes Roma for dead, this result shows that you can’t rule anybody out and if you don’t give 100% then the other team can always come out on top.”

The very special 1-0 in the double-winning season…

“With VCF we were able to get good results against Barcelona, but clearly the 1-0 was the most special result during our double-winning year. It made a statement and showing that we were a team that could win LaLiga. But it is clear that throughout history, these games have been exciting for spectators.”

Rodrigo’s good form and goalscoring record

“I already said a few weeks ago that I was convinced that he could beat my 19 goals in LaLiga, he is doing just that and so is all of the forward line, you can see how Santi Mina is and how Simone Zaza works. In the end, goals are most important for strikers, but they obviously wouldn’t be able to do it without the great work of the rest of the team and without them, Rodrigo wouldn’t be where he is.”

Second place in Division de Honor and qualifying for the cup

“In the end our qualification was a bit heroic because we staged a comeback, we knew that the only result that was worth anything to us was if Roda lost, they did, and when you achieve things in this manner they taste a little sweeter. We started by taking the lead and then it took an unexpected turn and Murcia got in front. In the second half it was all or nothing, and the boys were fantastic, they gave everything and I believe that we deserved to qualify because of the effort we’ve put in and the season we’ve had.

"You have to remember that the players are very young, they have to put up with a lot of pressure and they responded well, they’ve taken a step forward and this game will only serve as further experience. It felt amazing, above all when we found out about Roda’s result. We are lucky to have a very young generation of players that have big futures, but you have to keep polishing any diamonds. In the Academy they are doing things sensibly and they are giving the boys minutes, but ensuring that they keep their feet on the ground.

“It’s clear that at Valencia CF, it doesn’t matter which team that you are in the VCF Academy, everyone has the same goal and they care about all of the results. Those in charge are always looking out for everyone that goes on here. The first cup game is on May 13th, we have the handicap of the fact that some players have played in Segunda B and others are training with the first team. These results have been a success for everyone. When they congratulated me for qualifying, I think that I have to congratulate Valencia CF themselves.

"A potential opponent? At the end, only the best remain and, in this sense, we have to compete. If they’re at the top, I’m sure that it is because they are a good squad. It is going to be a special competition for us.”

The UEFA Youth League for next season

“Valencia CF are doing unbelievably well to bring back Champions League football, it is really deserved and this means that the youth team will play in the UEFA Youth League. But for now, we are focusing on the Copa del Rey during the next three of four weeks. That way, we can go into it at 100% and have a good tournament.”
