Mateu Alemany: “The home-grown players are key to this project”

Valencia CF have featured on ‘LaLiga Docs’ on Bein Sports

The fantastic season that Valencia CF are having is something that everyone is talking about, and this Friday the club was featured on BeIN Sports’ programme “LaLiga Docs”. The report shows the huge change that has occurred since the start of the new project, with Marcelino appointed and able to guide the club back to within touching distance of Champions League football.

“It was clear that things weren’t working. The team wasn’t working and the club needed to get back on the right track,” Mateu Alemany explained, and he considered Marcelino to be the “perfect” man for the job.

“We needed to look for the right person to come into the club at that point, with a style of football that could get results and live up to Valencia CF’s history, as well as what the fans wanted. He has brought Valencia CF back to success again. I was very lucky that Marcelino was on the market and he was the perfect person.”

A fan of Arrigo Sacchi’s AC Milan, a team that Marcelino called “extraordinary in every regard”, and Rafa Benitez, the Asturian coach has admitted that the biggest cogs in his style are the players: “choosing the players that are going to form your squad is the best way that you are going to achieve success.” On the pitch, his teams use a 4-4-2 and play on the counter.

Young players that have come through the club’s academy are key to the project, as Alemany explained: “Valencia CF, throughout its history, has always had a good foundation of players that were brought up at home. I believe that we are on the right path and I am certain that the home-grown players are going to be key to this project. You’re already seeing it and it can’t be questioned.”

Marcelino added that “I always like to work with younger people that have been formed in the academy. The footballer that develops from that gives you something different, he has an understanding and the club values are very important.”
