Marcelino: “We want to reward the fans with a good game that gets us closer to the Champions League”

The Valencia CF coach knows that playing at Mestalla “gives something extra” and the aim is to confirm Champions League qualification as soon as possible

Marcelino spoke to the media ahead of the game against Getafe CF at Mestalla on Wednesday.

The game earlier in the season was Valencia CF’s first defeat and it was a tough game. Is there talk of revenge in the dressing room?

No, each game is different. It’s obvious that we don’t have good memories of that game, I’d say quite bad because it was the first defeat after a rough match, where the pitch wasn’t in the best condition for a great game, but it’s in the past. We play against an opponent who are having a great season, they’re uncomfortable, difficult and we want to win, to confirm or get closer to qualifying for the Champions League. Getafe CF is one of the teams that we haven’t scored against and we want to reward our fans with a good game and get the victory to get closer to the Champions League.

This week the team has two chances to mathematically confirm qualification, is there a different atmosphere?

We’ll prepare for the game like always, with our idea to play a good game and be competitive and win. Playing at Mestalla is always something extra, we’ll try to give the fans a good show, to make them happy. We have a responsibility, we ask for their support, as we did in the most recent game, when they supported us and helped us win. Let’s see if we can get an important, decisive victory, it will be difficult because they’re an uncomfortable opponent, who drew in Barcelona, Sevilla and Bilbao, difficult grounds. We must look for our best performance to get the win.

You said after the game at Camp Nou that we’re not at the level of these big teams, do you mean the squad has to change a lot for next season?

I answered a clear question, we haven’t beaten those three teams (FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético) and that’s true. We couldn’t beat them, but we were close, some games we deserved to win, but little things meant we couldn’t. We want to grow, we have to grow, these rivals are now just a bit ahead of us and there are various circumstances to take into account: to be more competitive, increasing our potential because we’ll have three competitions in a few months time, and having ambition while being humble. Now we’ll try to qualify for the Champions League, it’s close, and once we’re there, it’s even harder to stay there than to get there. I think we could have won at Camp Nou. We have to take the next step, because we’re ambitious.

In your last season at Villarreal CF you managed to qualify for the Champions League but you couldn’t remain in charge for it, is this a kind of revenge?

I don’t see it as revenge, more like a prize for the work, but a coach’s work depends on the performance of the players. There’s always a part that doesn’t depend on your own work, there’s always the component of the players, the group. Let’s hope in September I can be coach of Valencia CF managing in a Champions League game.

Peter Lim might be present on Wednesday, will you meet with the owner?

If Peter Lim comes and we meet we’ll talk, he’s always been kind and respectful with me and if we meet, I’ll give my opinion with sincerity and honesty, as I always have.
