Marcelino: “Normally we would have won this game with all the chances we created”

Marcelino García Toral spoke in the Mestalla press room after the goalless draw with SD Eibar

A really long season

“LaLiga lasts 38 games, we’ve known that since the beginning of the season. But we were so excited about being so close, that anxiety got to us as the game went on. Normally we would have won this game with the number of chances we created. We had more than enough dominance and chances to win the game. But we weren’t efficient enough”.

Confirming qualification at Mestalla

“I’m sad not to have qualified for the Champions League today with our fans who supported us today and have done since the summer. It wasn’t to be because we didn’t finish. Now within six days there’s another game we have to win. We’ll go to a tough ground against a tough opponent but we want to beat them. I’m not anxious, I just want to qualify. We know how hard it is to achieve your goals”.

The youth of the squad

“ Perhaps today their youth could have affected them and I think it could be one of the reasons we didn’t win. If we had scored the first goal it would have been different, but we got into lots of good positions, and we weren’t clinical. We should be happy with the work of the team. We wanted to celebrate here with our fans, but now I hope we’ll do it in our first away game”.

Too much confidence

“After beating Sevilla we all thought it would come easily, and we haven’t been consistent enough. In these last two games we have got into good positions often, in Vigo and here at Mestalla, and we didn’t win. Sometimes you win with few chances and others you don’t score from many. I won’t comment on referees. There are three games left. If we can create chances like in the last two games we’ll score goals”.

Continuing at Mestalla

“A coach can’t stay for many years in one place, that’s logical. If the question had been would I like to stay at Valencia CF for many years I would have said yes. I know my profession, I’m experienced and we coaches have to be prudent. One thing is what you want and another is the reality. It doesn’t depend on you, but rather on everything else in football”.
