The full-back has improved defensively, in choosing when to join the attack, has been directly involved in five goals… and has played more than ever
José Luis Gayà’s name is right in the frame for the National Team, Julen Lopetegui has called him up recently, and that’s understandable, because the player is having his best ever season at the top level.
He’s a key man for Marcelino, he has only missed two games in LaLiga, and against SD Eibar Gayà topped his minutes from the 2014/15 season, which was his first as a first team player and the year he had played most until now. As full-back or winger, he is always ready to do his best for the team. He made his debut on 30th October 2012 and at 22 he’s still improving in both attack and defence.
Gayà is one of the team captains and he has improved a great deal this season. It’s not easy for opponents to get past him in defence, and his involvement in attack is a constant surprise too. José knows when to pick his moment to race upfield, his decision-making is superb, and when he gets to the byline he delivers. In LaLiga so far he has been directly involved in 5 goals, with 3 assists and 2 penalties won.
Another way in which the player has showed his maturity is in terms of his physique. Of 35 games played, he has gone the 90 minutes in 32 of them. Gayà knows his body better and he works hard on injury prevention, which has enabled him to break his personal records as a pro, with three games to go in LaLiga.
