Toni Hernández: “The image of Valencia CF and the VCF Academy has been raised in China”

Antonio Hernández, who is responsible for the workings within the Valencia CF Academy and went along as part of the club’s U17 tour to Guangzhou, told VCFRadio on Thursday about the impact that youth football has been having abroad.

“The first thing that I want to say is that despite losing the final on penalties, the team performed well from the start and deserved the trophy. The work of the lads and the coaching staff was very positive both as a collective and individually, penalties are a lottery and those who deserve to win don’t always get to. We lost our first game but the team learned a lot and through hard work and training they have left Valencia CF and the VCF Academy’s reputation high in China.”

“It was a tournament with some very big teams involved; Boca Juniors, Inter and Kashima, with the VCF Academy in there too. It is great to be able to play against such high-level opponents. This tournament can also have an effect in terms of the media, they want to see the players that the best clubs in Europe and the rest of the world have, how they work, what the coaches do and they look to absorb everything about how academies in Brazil, Argentina, Spain and Italy work. We are very happy with the feedback that Valencia CF and our Academy has received in Guangzhou.”

“We are moving forward, lads who are 15, 16 and 17 are already learning what it is like to have jet lag in an international game, to leave home and eat totally different things, hours for resting up, how to look after themselves, etc. On top of that, they have the advantage of having a coach that has experienced all of this at the club already. They seem like professionals, but they are kids, they are turning into adults and on top of the sporting side of things, they need to learn more and develop as people. It was a period of 12 days away from home and we are very proud of all of them and their coaching staff.”
