Marcelino: “It’s been a really good year, we’ve exceeded all expectations”

After a year as Valencia CF coach, he says there are no 'ifs' or 'buts' to an excellent debut season

Marcelino spoke to the press at the “Media Center” at our Paterna Training Ground ahead of the club’s game with Girona FC, a year after the club announced his signing.

Valencia CF haven’t won their last five LaLiga games, what would you say to people who aren’t happy with the team?

It’s not for me to tell the fans what they should or shouldn’t do. We’re really happy with the support they’ve given us, they have helped us win games and we know the fans are demanding. You can’t question what the squad have done this season. When you exceed all expectations and you finish fourth… I have nothing to criticise this squad about, we’ve been a really competitive team, and with a squad that wasn’t expected to be in the Champions League, when on matchday 31 you’re 16 points ahead of fifth, 18 ahead of sixth and 19 ahead of seventh, it’s really logical that there’s a dip in terms of intensity and concentration. It’s been really tough for us to reach our goal, thanks to them and their work they’ve made it possible for us to play in the Champions League and in this dip we’ve deserved to get more points than we have, because we’ve lacked clinical finishing. With all the respect in the world to the fans and what they think, there are no ifs or buts about this season.

With two LaLiga games left, will you rotate the team?

This week Carlos Soler will come in to replace Parejo and Kondogbia in central midfield. We’ve always tried to play in an organised way, and if we want to remain well-organised, it’s easier with fewer changes to the system. We have the right players to do it and now we have to perfect it with the players we have, who are really good. I’m not a fan of changing tactics, I think it increases doubts in the players’ minds and they lose their personality.

It’s been a year since they announced your signing, how would you assess it?

It’s been a really good year, much better than expected in every aspect. I’ve had the support of the club since the first day and I’ve had control of decision-making, I’m also really grateful to the fans for how they’ve treated me every day. It’s been perhaps the best squad I’ve had in a sporting and human sense, and all together it’s allowed us to exceed all expectations. What more can I say?

With the demands of the Champions League, how can this team develop?

We need to build a team that we’re sure can compete at a higher level, and we won’t prioritize nationality. In the market we’ll identify the profiles we think we need to make a stronger team and the market will dictate if we can do that or look for alternatives.

How do you evaluate Garay’s season?

Garay has had a really good season just like his teammates. We’re really happy. He’s a player with a lot of experience in big games and he’s shown that. We can all improve.

Will you stick with Gonzalo Villar in these games?

Gonzalo is in the squad for Girona, as Kondogbia has some issues with his ankle, and we don’t want to take any risks that could make the injury worse.
