Marcelino: “I want us to enjoy it all together at Mestalla after a great year”

The VCF coach wants to close out the league campaign with a win against Deportivo to celebrate a special season

Marcelino spoke to the media at Montilivi after Valencia CF’s 1-0 win over Girona FC which came courtesy of a strike from Luciano Vietto in the second half.

Weighing up the game

“Valencia CF always try to win and I saw a big difference from the game against Celta where we drew. We could have also won against Eibar. In recent games we haven’t won, we only had two bad runs out against Villarreal and Getafe. Today, however, we scored thanks to the wonder goal from Lucho, we haven’t conceded and I am very happy with the win. Furthermore, players who haven’t played a lot have had a great game. In the second half we had the chances to score more goals.”

A great team over the duration of the season

“When the season ends, we will have to make decisions. There is still a game left to play, although I am clear in the fact that this squad, this group, in my opinion deserve maximum respect because they have brought us to a point we didn’t think we would get to. Therefore, we have to wait until this all finishes.”

The final game at Mestalla

"I would like for next Sunday to be a real celebration at Mestalla, it has been a very good year in every way, in terms of results. The fans have identified with this team from the start, the players should be grateful to their supporters and we are going to be playing in the Champions League next season. I think that we should enjoy this great year and enjoy it all together. The present is better than August 18th when we started out in LaLiga. Valencia CF, with seven games left to play, had 66 or 67 points. That’s a lot, and the three above us have taken a lot of points too. Everything was already decided in the top four. There are three clubs playing in a different league and we have to be champions of this other league, we have to be really pleased.”
