Marcelino’s midfield at Montilivi had an average age of 20 years old

Carlos Soler, Maksimovic, Guedes and Ferran Torres performed well versus Girona FC

Marcelino made eight changes against Girona FC, compared to Valencia CF’s last LaLiga outing, and his midfield line was a very young one indeed. With an average age of 20.75 years old, Carlos Soler and Nemanja Maksimovic featured in central midfield, while Goncalo Guedes and Ferran Torres were deployed on the wings. As a whole, they put in a solid showing together.

Up until this point of the season, the second-youngest midfield line that Marcelino had opted for came in match day 10, where Kondogbia, Carlos Soler, Andreas Pereira and Guedes featured against Deportivo Alavés at Mendizorroza (1-2).

The weekend’s game at Montilivi saw Ferran Torres make his second ever league start, with the youngster doing extremely well down the right-hand side with his pace and endeavour. Guedes would always look to drive at speed, and won Valencia CF a lot of free kicks after being brought down cynically. Maksimovic ensured that he was on hand whenever possession turned over.

Carlos Soler put in a good showing and just lacked a goal to put the icing on the cake. Despite trying his luck in the first half with a few long-range efforts, he couldn’t find the killer touch, before going close after the hour mark following a great team move.

Gayà ended the game playing out wide ahead of Nacho Vidal

Marcelino decided to take off Ferran Torres in the 77th minute against Girona FC, with the substitute coming on and playing as a winger ahead of Toni Lato. In the last five minutes of the game, however, Lato was taken off with a knock, leaving Nacho Vidal to come into the fray in his place. It was the first time that Nacho had featured in a competitive game since January 6th.
