Marcelino keeps Valencia CF on track for the fourth-best points tally in their history

After beating Girona FC, the Asturian coach secured his best-ever second half to a league campaign

Valencia CF already have 70 points in the bag for the current LaLiga campaign, a record that the club have only bettered on three occasions in the past with a game still to play. Marcelino has already wrapped up the best second-half to the season that he has ever had in the league, hitting 30 points to beat the 28 that he previously took as Racing Santander boss in 2007/08.

This fantastic season has been a culmination of hard work that has been put in by the whole team. By taking 21 victories, Valencia CF are just one win behind Real Madrid and two off Atlético Madrid, two clubs that have been settled for a while and have bigger budgets. Only in the 2014/15, 2003/04 and 2001/02 seasons have the club taken more points that the current campaign, aside from in 1995/96 when there were 42 match days.

As shown against Girona FC, whoever is picked to start will fight to take the win. Everyone was important at Montilivi, with Lucho Vietto firing home the winning goal to make it 0-1 on the day. Those three points take Valencia CF to 30 points in the second half of the season, with the group improving bit by bit. From Wednesday, the squad will be hard at work once again to focus on LaLiga’s final match day against Deportivo.
