Valencia CF, the LaLiga club that puts its faith in youth

As many as nine players born after 1st January 1995 have featured in the team’s outstanding season

Valencia CF trusts in young, hungry footballers, players who have room for improvement and are able to show it under Marcelino’s watchful eye. With one game to go until the curtain comes down on this LaLiga season, as many as nine players born after 1st January 1995 have featured as first team members, five of them raised in the VCF Academy, which is one of the foundations of the club’s project.

No other First Division club has trusted in so many young players. The number one beneficiary has been José Luis Gayà, reaching 3,217 minutes, followed by Gonçalo Guedes, Carlos Soler, Santi Mina, Andreas Pereira, Toni Lato, Maksimovic, Nacho Vidal and Ferran Torres, who are joined by Javi Jiménez, who is yet to feature in a competitive game. Until January, the spot now occupied by Ferran was taken by Nacho Gil, who is on loan at UD Las Palmas.

The game against Girona FC showed that Marcelino doesn’t consider a player’s age when picking his starting XI. He picked five youngsters born since 1st January 1995, and the team won 0-1. Between them, the young players have played 14,545 minutes this season, with Real Madrid being the second team in LaLiga in terms of players born since 1995, with seven. The performances on the pitch of these young talents, accompanied by other more experienced teammates, have been exceptional and have propelled Valencia CF back to the Champions League.
