Marcelino: "We're going to work hard to build a better Valencia CF”

An unforgettable day

I’m grateful to the players and the fans for the incredible moments I’ve experienced today at Mestalla. These players have had a great season, to get 73 points, being three points off Real Madrid, hasn’t been easy. They’ve achieved it through hard work, hope, effort, sacrifice. That’s why I feel proud of them. To think of this last May was more a dream than reality, but these players have made it possible for us. Now, looking ahead to next season, which will be tough, our aim is to maintain this level.

A good run

I can say that I’ve had a lot of good moments as a coach, really good. You experience each one differently. It’s really beautiful, experiencing this moment. It’s a reward for the good work of our players. For me the most important moment was when I was presented as Valencia CF coach last May, and then the 31st of August when we finalised a squad we were happy with. I believed in this squad. The connection between the fans and the team has been really beautiful.

The future

From tomorrow we’ll start to work without hurry or delay, because we want to build a better team. It won’t be easy, but we’ll try with all our effort. And we can do it if we work hard. We have to analyse the whole season, what we can improve, and take decisions. A club like Valencia CF, alongside our good results, may always be at risk of having to sell, and that’s why you have to buy well. We hope to get it right.

Waiting until the end of the market

It will be difficult for the squad to be finalised before the end of the transfer window, and coaches don’t decide the dates. A World Cup in the middle can delay everything too. The main thing is not to rush the decisions we’re going to take and try to take the best ones possible. The key is not to make us weaker, if there are sales.
