Zaza: “When I scored I got emotional”

The Valencia player made his Italy return in the best way possible… with a goal

In Italy’s third friendly, Mancini gave Simone Zaza a chance and with just three minutes on the pitch… he scored. The Valencia CF forward seized his moment, reading the play and getting away from his man to score from Chiesa’s cross. His reaction was an emotional one, covering his face with his hands as his teammates mobbed him in celebration.

His excellent season for Valencia CF helped him get back into the Azzuri squad last November, when Italy played Sweden for a place at the World Cup in Russia, but a knock meant he couldn’t join up. He wasn’t called upon for the friendlies in March, but Mancini, in his debut as coach, didn’t hesitate to call on him and on Monday Zaza repaid that faith with the goal that put Italy ahead against Holland (1-1). He hadn’t pulled on an Italy shirt since 15th November 2016, and the return couldn’t have gone any better.

At the final whistle, speaking on the pitch, Zaza said: “The national team has always been my aim and I got a bit emotional, it’s normal. It’s a good group and we can grow a lot. Even negative experiences help me grow. We’re a team that will be competitive again in time, we have quality and enthusiasm” said the Italian, who gave everything on the pitch: “I’m happy with the goal because I had some sad memories with the national team. It was a good team performance, we played well, the draw was a shame. Personally I’m happy because I hadn’t scored with the national team in a long time, I haven’t had much luck, but when I have the chance to play I give everything like always”.
