The players that helped us return to the Champions League: Dani Parejo

The captain has had a season to remember, in attack and in defense

He’s our number 10. And that says it all. Although in Dani Parejo’s case, perhaps not, because the man from Coslada has broken the mold this campaign, being much more than just a playmaker.

As well as scoring 7 goals and providing 7 assists in LaLiga, being the fulcrum in attack, Parejo has also been among the stand-out players in LaLiga this season in terms of duels won, ball recoveries, distance covered and cautions received, most of them for helping the team in defence. The statistics suggest a more complete player. And that’s why he achieved one of his dreams this season, making his international debut with Spain. Despite not making the final squad for the World Cup in Russia, Julen Lopetegui will be keeping him in mind for the future.

Together with Kondogbia, Parejo has formed one of the most solid central midfields in LaLiga. On the pitch, he has been Marcelino’s right-hand man: “Marcelino is a top coach. From the first day’s training, I thought I can’t miss working with this coach”.

He’s the captain, on and off the field. With a footballing and personal maturity that have made him an icon for the fans, Parejo has had his best ever season, and as he admits, it’s been a campaign  to remember. The standing ovation he received in the last game against Depor is still echoing around Mestalla.

“At the beginning of the season, the dream became an objective, now the objective has been achieved and the dream is a reality. Great job everyone, enjoy it”. That’s how the captain said goodbye to the fans, and now he’s recharging his batteries for next season, with the return to the Champions League and the celebrations for the club’s Centenary.
