Marcelino’s best ever attacking trident

The Asturian coach has never had three players score 47 goals at the top level. Rodrigo, Santi Mina and Zaza have broken Marcelino’s record with Zaragoza in 2008/09

Marcelino wasn’t surprised when the three forwards at his disposal all season long ended it in double figures. Playing with two strikers helps boost those numbers, and Rodrigo, who led the way with 19 goals, followed by Santi Mina (15) and Zaza (13) made up the best attacking trident coached by the Asturian, with a total of 47 strikes.

Until now, Marcelino’s best figures came in the 2008/09 season when in charge of Real Zaragoza in the Second Division, with 46 goals scored by Ewerthon (28), Ricardo Oliveira (9) and Arizmendi (9). Despite the excellent numbers achieved by Valencia CF in the current campaign, Marcelino and his coaching staff know there’s still room for improvement, as in the first half of the season there were three games that upped the goal scoring average of the team – with six scored against Real Betis (3-6), five against Málaga CF (5-0) and four against Sevilla FC (4-0).

This Valencia CF have had the best attacking triple threat of any team coached by Marcelino in the First Division. Rodrigo, Zaza and Santi Mina scored 41 LaLiga goals, breaking the record of 34 scored by his Villarreal CF in 2013/14, when he also saw three players get into double figures.
