Late Diakhaby goal holds Sevilla at Mestalla (1-1)

December, 08 2018 -

A late Mouctar Diakhaby header gave Valencia CF a point in their Saturday afternoon encounter with Sevilla, as the game ended 1-1 at Mestalla.

VCF had not lost to Sevilla at home in six seasons, coming into their Matchday 15 meeting. Rodrigo Moreno was brought into the starting lineup after missing the LaLiga game against Real Madrid and the Copa del Rey contest against Ebro, coming back in the nick of time as Kevin Gameiro was deemed unable to feature against his former club through injury.

It took just two minutes for Valencia CF to trouble the opposition goalkeeper, as Dani Parejo lifted a free kick into the box for Ezequiel Garay to head towards goal from the penalty spot. Tomás Vaclik kept out the attempt, then blocked the close-range follow-up from Santi Mina with his chest.

The pressure continued in the opening spell, and a penalty appeal was waved away by the referee after consultation with the VAR. The ball was adjudged not to have hit Kjaer's hand.

Valencia CF eventually slowed the pace, allowing Sevilla more of the ball, and the opportunities inside the area for both sides were limited. An effort from the edge of the box by Rodrigo was the closest chance late on, going over the crossbar as the first half ended 0-0.

The second half began much like the first, with Vaclik having to make a save. This time it was Carlos Soler who sent the ball goalwards, thwarted by the Sevilla stopper.

Against the run of play, Sevilla took the lead on 54 minutes, as Sarabia found himself one-on-one with Neto and put the ball into the net.

Marcelino subbed off Gonçalo Guedes just past the hour mark, bringing on Denis Cheryshev. His second change was forced upon him, with Paulista unable to continue and being replaced by Diakhaby, and then the VCF coach decided that Batshuayi's presence was required -introducing him in place of Mina.

Valencia CF attempted to create chances, but Sevilla proved to be too solid in defense until the final minute of stoppage time, in which Diakhaby put the ball into the net off a Parejo assist, to salvage a point at the death.
