Match Report: Piccini’s last-gasp strike fires VCF back to winning ways and into Christmas (2-1)

Valencia CF played versus SD Huesca in the first LaLiga match and  2018 on matchday 17 at Mestalla at 12:00 pm kick-off time CET and looking to finish it off with a victory in front of the fans.

Valencia CF tried to play their typical possession football. Santi Mina had the first chance with a fine move but his shot was blocked off by a defender. Valencia CF had a good start to the game in the opening minutes with good exchanges but missing the final pass.

Rodrigo Moreno headed it with after a great ball by Daniel Wass and Carlos Soler sprint through the middle. Two minutes later, Dani Parejo gave Valencia CF the lead after a well-worked move between Denis Cheryshev, Rodrigo Moreno and Dani Parejo.

Following the goal, SD Huesca tested Neto from point-blank range through Melero but the Brazilian keeper was equal to it.

Santi Mina came close to scoring the second with a thunderous header but Santamaria pulled off a smart save on 40 minutes to keep it at 1-0. Valencia CF had a penalty call ignored by the referee in the closing seconds of the first half. The first half between Valencia CF and SD Huesca finished 1-0 for Valencia CF.

Valencia CF came out in the second half looking to score the second goal but it was SD Huesca who forced Neto into a save as he rushed off his line to deny Rivera the equaliser. Musto flashed a shot narrowly wide.

Carlos Soler tried his luck after a great piece of play from Rodrigo but Santamaria produced yet another stop. Valencia CF were pegged back level by Huesca from twelve yards as Cucho was pulled back in the box who scored the resulting spot-kick.

Valencia CF looked to retake the lead through Soler and Jose Gayà who nodded it at the keeper in a cagey second period but there was a last gasp twist to the tale with a stoppage-time winner by Piccini who fired Valencia to victory. Valencia CF will play versus CD Alavés on Saturday the 5th of January at Mendizorrotza at 4.15pm on matchday 18 of LaLiga Santander.

Observations: Matchday 17 of LaLiga played on Sunday, 12 pm, at Mestalla before 36,547 spectators. Ex-players Roberto Gil and Fernando Giner carried the foundational flag onto the pitch in the moments leading up to kick-off. The flag was in the pre-match team photo.
