Marcelino García Toral spoke after his side’s hard-fought 2-1 victory at Mestalla against Huesca
“It’s a result that doesn’t give us much; we’ve drawn ten games in which we deserved much better results. In Eibar we deserved to win. This result compensates for one of the many draws that we’ve had. We hope that this win helps boost our belief in ourselves. We’re a competitive team who have played as equals against big sides. However, we have had -and still have- a serious problem, which is our lack of goals. We have to work on this. I’m optimistic and I think that this situation is going to be turned around.”
Analysis of the game
“A win always makes you happy. We were hoping to win in another way, but we suffered once again from a lack of effectiveness in front of goal. We had enough chances to make it 2-0, and we didn’t do it. When you can’t get the second goal, things get nervy as time goes on. The penalty was a result of that. I can understand the fans showing what they think, and I respect the way they act.”
“I understand the celebration from my players. They need confidence much more than I do. We had five very important players missing today, and the team fought hard. They need confidence in order to get the best out of themselves. This excessive desire is what stifles us and has led to us conceding penalties. After it was 1-0, we had our worst phase in the game, recovering after the Huesca equaliser. We need everyone to work to overcome this.”
A Christmas wish for 2019
“Above all, not to have any players injured. We had five out today. I’d also ask for more effectiveness in front of goal; we have scored the same amount as the side bottom of the table. I’m always optimistic. We’ve only lost three league games and two in the Champions League, against Manchester United and Juventus. We haven’t won more because of our problems scoring. We have to keep insisting, and in the end the goals will come. I think that Huesca’s goalkeeper was their best player, and this has happened many times this season.”
