The sole VCF strike in the game against Sporting Gijon provided the Frenchman with the unique accolade
Kevin Gameiro's goal against Sporting Gijon will go down in Spanish football history, as the first cup goal to be awarded thanks to VAR. The use of the video referee has come into effect in the Copa del Rey as of the Round of 16, and it did not long for a decision to be required from the latest edition to the competition.
There was also debate as to whether an initial shot by Dani Parejo had crossed the line after hitting the crossbar, but there was no doubt as to Gameiro's header making it into the net. Referee Undiano Mallenco consulted the VAR over a possible offside, eventually giving the goal to Gameiro.
The goal is Gameiro's seventh against Sporting from four games against the Asturian side. He has six goals against the likes of Málaga CF, Granada CF, Girondins, LOSC Lille, Toulouse and AS Nancy.
