Marcelino gave a press conference at the Benito Villamarin after a positive 2-2 draw against Betis
Speaking after the Copa del Rey semifinal first leg against Real Betis, coach Marcelino expressed his satisfaction with the result for Valencia CF.
"Football is difficult to explain. For us to be losing the game 2-0 through goals from set pieces, having created more clear chances than our opponents, wasn't fair. But this team had shown enough on the pitch during the first 55 minutes to not be losing 2-0, and they didn't drop their heads," explained the coach.
"They scored twice, hit the woodwork and the opposition didn't have any chances on goal. The result is fair, because we were losing 2-0, but being completely objective I'd say that the side who did the most to win were Valencia CF. We should have left here with a better result."
"We shouldn't make the mistake of considering ourselves favourites. We have to think that we have 90 minutes to go at Mestalla, which will be very difficult for both teams. Betis have won at the Camp Nou and the Bernabeu, and although we have a positive result in hand, we aren't in the final yet. We should have humility, work hard and be pleased, because of how the score was in the 55th minute."
Marcelino was keen to keep the players and the fans calm, and will not allow anyone to get ahead of themselves.
"We need to control the euphoria. That's down to everyone. We can't consider ourselves favourites and think that we're already into the final, because we have another game to go. That would be a very bad move. We need to be humble and have the utmost respect for a good team. We will need to have one of our best games in order to get to the final. In my modest opinion, we were rather better than Betis tonight."
