Marcelino: "We will have to match Celtic for intensity"

The VCF coach's pre-match press conference at Celtic Park

Marcelino spoke to journalists in attendance at Celtic Park ahead of Valencia CF's European test against Celtic, and explained his side's excitement about the game.

The approach to the game

We face the game with the utmost excitement. It's a nixe competition and very attractive for everyone. It's a difficult situation for us due to the amount of players we have out, and we're up against a side who are very tough to beat at home. They got through the Group Stage by eliminating Leipzig. We will have to have a very good game, because our idea is to continue in this competition.

A possible rest for Parejo

We have problems in that position. We have to take things carefully with Kondogbia, as he's coming back from injury, and Coquelin has some slight niggles. Parejo has been working very hard. We will see if we are able to match our efforts with the competitive level of the team. After the training session we'll know more, and we will decide who plays on Thursday. We have to reflect on how many games have been accumulated and how many remain.

Injuries to Mina and Rodrigo

With the away game that we have in mind, we're thinking that Guedes or Cheryshev could occupy that position up top. It will be unlikely that we have Mina back for Sunday and also difficult to have Rodrigo back then, so we have to make an evaluation of that position. Guedes and Cheryshev have a chance of playing up front.

The atmosphere at Celtic Park

It's one of the most spectacular atmospheres in European football and we're eager to experience it. They say that it's similar to Anfield, where I was once for an important game. Here there is a similar atmosphere, or even more deafening. Every professional wants to play in that kind of atmosphere, and there's no bigger motivation.

This team and their fans make things very difficult for the opposition. They are very intense, fast, dynamic, good with their passing and physical. They are a higher level side than we initially expected. They will make things tough for us, and we will have to match them for intensity, maintain that pace for 90 minutes and play to our strengths with the ball. We're excited and want to win, putting the tie in our favour, but we know there will be tough moments. With our experience, commitment and competitive spirit, we have to solve the problems.

The return leg at Mestalla

I'd like to have every tie killed off after the first leg, be it against Celtic or any other opponents. I don't see it being so easy. This is a very hard game; winning away from home in Europe is very difficult, and even more so here. We have a lot of people out, and I hope that we can win tomorrow. There will be 60,000 fans cheering their side on, and a team with good young players who have international caps. They have very good players, so we're going to have to perform well in both games in order to go through.
