Valencia Club de Fútbol purchased the Paterna land during the presidency ofFrancisco Ros Casares, in 1974. Doubtless, this purchase was the best legacy of this president, who tried to apply his management view to the football and bet for modernising the club.
The Paterna land was a great success. Up until then, Valencia footballers used to train in inappropriate conditions for a team of their category. The training sessions took place in a land located behind the numbered terraces, which lacked the statutory measurement. They trained in exceptional occasions in the Mestallastadium. Some times the footballers trained in Benimar facilities.
Despite these deficient conditions, Ros Casares and his board of directors had to face much opposition to this project. The team trained by Di Stéfano was going through a bad sporting situation; therefore the supporters were more concerned about this fact than about the bet on the future proposed by the board of directors. After endless discussions, the members’ assembly approved the purchase of the land for a total of seventy million pesetas. Ros Casares could not even sign the trading deed since at the time of its formalisation he was no longer in the presidency. The final amount was 85 million pesetas, after purchasing some adjacent land as well.
Ros Casares and his team proved to have a good view in this transaction, since the condition they had imposed was that the Ciudad Deportiva land should be located close to the future by-pass: that is why Paterna was chosen.
The present Ciudad Deportiva, after its redesign, was opened on the 19th of February of 1992. Throughout the years the land has been prepared as training field for the first team and football school.
The Ciudad Deportiva extends across an area of 180.000 sq.m. It is not only a school for future footballers and residence, but also a modern Rehabilitation Centre provided with different rooms for the recovery of footballers that are injured or in rehabilitation period.
There are several special rooms, like those for the physiotherapists, for jacuzzi, sauna and swimming pool. The large gym, with its different and modern machines, is the perfect complement for the appropriate physical training of the footballers. On the first floor, the main building has ten rooms to lodge the footballers, as well as a living room and a dining room. The coach can play videos in order to analyse his team play and study their rival teams in the audiovisuals room. The dressing rooms for the first and second team are on the ground floor.
Connected to the main building there is a terrace with a capacity of 3.000 spectators approximately, where Valencia B uses to play their matches. On their side, Valencia’s first team has several grass fields for their regular training sessions, as well as some areas reserved for their exclusive use.
Valencia Club de Fútbol´s sport facilities keep on becoming larger in order to better hold hundreds of sportsmen that use them on a daily basis. The last improvements have provided this complex with two training ramps (power) and a futvoley pitch.
Valencia’s Ciudad Deportiva is considered one of the best ones in Europe, on a par with other mythical football schools.
